Are you a data person scrambling to find a new solution after InnovateEDU announced Landing Zone is shutting down? Don't worry, you are not alone. We have been meeting with many data teams who are looking to move to K12 Analytics Engineering. Two of our team members, myself and Patrick Yoho, were early engineers on Landing Zone which positions us well to provide a smooth transition to K12 Analytics Engineering.
This is also not a new type of conversation for us due to Renaissance announcing a while back that they would be shutting down Schoolzilla at the close of the 2025 school year.
We are always excited to walk data people through the many ways we are different and how our offering is structured to help in ways previous solutions were unable to.
Team
First, the team. We are a team of senior data engineers. It is no surprise that I believe we have the best data engineering team in K12 education today. Our domain expertise runs deep. We have worked in schools, founded schools, led data teams, and more. We know K12 and we know data engineering through and through.
Unlimited integrations
I was an early Schoolzilla customer back in 2013. I remember watching my Schoolzilla bill tick up every time I mentioned a source system I would need integrated into my data warehouse. At the time I was a Director of IT and Data providing 1:1 Chromebooks to all students. A device for every student meant I had a lot of source systems!
With K12 Analytics Engineering, our pricing does not change based on the number of integrations you have. If you have a source system that you need integrated and they offer an API, SFTP data drop, or some other way for us to grab data in an automated way, we want to ingest that data and integrate it into your data warehouse.
Data warehouse
We believe that a true data warehouse should represent the organization. This means integrating data from across many siloed, disparate systems. Schoolzilla would create a data warehouse and leave clients to create custom schemas separate from the warehouse if they needed anything bespoke. Landing Zone would create several wide (OBT) tables from SIS data leaving all non-SIS data in its raw state elsewhere. We start from the K12 Analytics data model and then customize in whatever way we need to so that your warehouse represents your organization. The warehouse below has datasets that represent various functions (ie attendance, grades, etc). A student dimension may contain data from a SIS, IEP platform, and more.
The specific warehouse below has student course grades. After creating that dataset, the client asked for student course assignment grades. We were happy to add that as well and they did not pay anything more for us to do so. We want our clients to have what they need to drive impact at their organization.
Help with BI
We do our best work when we are paired with a BI developer or data analyst at an organization. We can be the data engineering arm ready to ingest data from key source systems and build out an enterprise data warehouse such that the BI developer can create the data products necessary for their organization.
If you are building dashboards in Looker Studio or Lightdash, and find yourself needing a thought partner, count us in! We are always happy to lean in and help troubleshoot odd behavior in the BI platform, or help tweak a report a bit should you find yourself stuck.
Those are just a few ways that we stand apart in the space. We are excited about what we are building over here and we are having a blast working with so many wonderful organizations. Do reach out if you’re interested in joining us!
